The detective who hunted her down in the movie was really a man named Detective Mcgowan. There is a photo below.
In the movie the child who found her mother is a little girl. In the true story it was a boy. When the boy phoned his father, he told his father that there was something "in her mouth". That's when the husband knew that something was definitely wrong.
